Fort XVIIb Twierdzy Modlin

Powstał on według koncepcji standardowego fortu Bujnickiego z 1910 r.

🇬🇧 Fort XVIIb was built in the years 1912-1914 and was the main fort of the Fort Group "Janówek" on this section of the outer ring of the Modlin Fortress. It was built according to the concept of the standard Bujnicki fort from 1910. It was a triangular fort, surrounded by one embankment and a moat with an earthen counter-scarp. The main part of the fort was an ambulance bunker with a trapezoidal outline leaning against the fort's neck, placed under the embankment of the front embankment. On the ceiling, separate shooting positions for infantry, separated by concrete traverses, were created, and two armored observation towers were to be placed in the fort's shoulders. In the front part of the embankment in front of the bunker (courtyard), an additional combat position was to be built, connected with the interior of the fort. However, until the outbreak of World War I, the full construction of the fortifications was not completed. The aforementioned post was not built, and instead of the barracks, the basement rooms were enlarged by placing bunks on the walls, which was a more effective solution in terms of defense against enemy fire than the classic neck barracks. In 1915, most probably while the Russian army was leaving the fortifications, the main elements of the fortifications were blown up. In September 1939, the fort was on the line of the German attack on the Modlin Fortress. Currently, fort XVIIb is mostly destroyed: the closed neck caponier and most of the bunker are destroyed. Only the sidewalks leading to the artillery towers and the pass in the right shoulder remain.

Agencja Mienia Wojskowego sprzedała teren dawnego fortu, obecnie służy on jako pole paintballowe i miejsce do trenowania wspinaczki skałkowej.

🇬🇧 Fort XVIIa, also known as Work D-9, was built as part of the Janówek Fort Group in 1912-1915. It was located 500 m north of forts IV and XVIIb. The fort served as a defensive barracks. The left shoulder was to have an armored observation turret. As the fortification is largely damaged, it is difficult to say more. Besides, the work was never finished. After the war devastation caused by the blowing up of some of the fortifications by the Russians in 1915, only the damaged parts of the rooms and the vertical wall remained from the defensive barracks. In the spring of 2002, the Military Property Agency sold the area of the former fort, now it serves as a paintball field and a place for training rock climbing.

Fort IV Twierdzy Modlin

🇵🇱 Fort IV został zbudowany we wsi Janówek w latach 1883-1888. Powstał on na planie rosyjskiego fortu ceglanego F-1879. Fortyfikacje wzniesiono celem zamknięcia odcinka Twierdzy Modlin od wschodu, ściślej pomiędzy rzekami Narwią i Wisłą. Fort posiadał narys lunety, został otoczony fosą z kuwetą i wyposażony w podwójny wał: niski wał piechoty otaczał cały fort, a wysoki wał artyleryjski – czoło i fragment barków. Kojce czołowe i skarpowe połączono z resztą fortyfikacji. Do obrony dziedzińca wewnętrznego zbudowano dwie kazamaty pełniące funkcje prochowni, połączone z kojcami skarpowymi. Szyja fortu była broniona m.in. z kaponiery szyjowej. Dodatkowo zbudowano wysokie trawersy pomiędzy stanowiskami artylerii, zmniejszające pole rażenia pocisków w razie trafienia. W związku z unowocześnianiem się broni artyleryjskiej, mogącej skutecznie niszczyć ceglane fortyfikacje, w latach 1889-1900 fort w Janówku został zmodernizowany. Wówczas stropy koszar zostały wzmocnione betonem, ceglane kojce skarpowe zastąpiono murowanymi kaponierami przeciwskarpowymi, dwa wały otaczające fort zostały przebudowane w jeden i zlikwidowano trawersy. W 1955 r. fort IV dostosowano do potrzeb magazynowych wojska i zabezpieczono część zniszczonych elementów fortyfikacji. W 1995 r. wojsko opuściło teren.

🇬🇧 Fort IV was built in the village of Janówek in the years 1883-1888. It was built on the plan of the Russian brick fort F-1879. The fortifications were erected to close the section of the Modlin Fortress from the east, more precisely between the Narew and Vistula rivers. The fort had a telescope outline, was surrounded by a moat with a litter box and equipped with a double shaft: the low infantry embankment surrounded the entire fort, and the high artillery embankment - the forehead and a fragment of the shoulders. Frontal and slope pens were connected with the rest of the fortifications. To defend the inner courtyard, two casemates were built, serving as a powder magazine, connected with slope pens. The neck of the fort was defended, among others from cervical caponiers. Additionally, high traverses were built between the artillery positions, reducing the range of the projectiles in the event of a hit. Due to the modernization of artillery weapons, which could effectively destroy brick fortifications, the fort in Janówek was modernized in the years 1889-1900. At that time, the barracks' ceilings were reinforced with concrete, the brick slope pens were replaced with brick anti-scarp caponiers, two embankments surrounding the fort were rebuilt into one and the traverses were removed. As part of the expansion of the Modlin Fortress, the Janówek Fort Group was established in this section in 1912-1915. Fort IV was then a backstage fort, therefore its combat functions were limited. During World War I, from August 14 to 18, 1915, the forts in Janówek were directly attacked by German troops. From their positions on the Krubiny-Skierdy line, the Germans conducted artillery fire. Ultimately, the fort was occupied by the Germans after the Russians left it, which took place on the night of August 17-18, 1915. Most likely, the retreating Russians blew up important elements of the fortifications. In the interwar period and after World War II, the area was occupied by the Polish Army. In 1955, Fort IV was adapted to the storage needs of the army and some of the damaged elements of the fortifications were secured. In 1995, the army left the area.
