🇵🇱 Kolonia osadnicza powstała w latach 20. XIX w.
Później popadały one w ruinę i były zaniedbywane.
🇬🇧 A settlement colony was established in the 1820s. The cemetery itself was established in the 19th century. Initially, it was buried for Hollander colonists settling in these lands, later it was also used for the burial of Polish inhabitants of the area. In the records of the Tarchomin parish, you can find documents about Michałów-Grabina.
Why did I mention that Poles were also buried here? Over the years, Poles and Hollander colonists maintained good-neighborly relations, and German and Polish families mixed up (which is confirmed by record books and some Polish names). It is worth mentioning that according to the census of 1921, 494 "Olęders" lived in the entire commune of Nieporęt, of which 105 people from the Augustówek colony declared German nationality. During World War II, some of the least assimilated colonists, as a result of the propaganda of the Third Reich, joined the German army, but there were also families involved in hostilities on the Polish side.
The first destructions come from September 1944. At that time, the eastern front of World War II was moving through this area, and the devastation was carried out by the Red Army soldiers. After the war, the lands of the former settlers were sold. The cemeteries were gradually destroyed in order to obtain stone building material. Later they fell into disrepair and were neglected. As you can see in the cemetery in Michałów-Grabina there are monuments and tombstones made of concrete, terrazzo and sandstone, and the inscriptions are bilingual - in Polish and German. The cemetery in which we are now has been cleaned, and the tombstones, which had been deteriorating many years ago, were renovated. This is due to the painstaking work undertaken by the Nieporęckie Historical Association. We support such initiatives because we believe that caring for local testimonies of old history is one of the forms of saving history from oblivion.
